About 50,000 Students!

Depending upon what estimate you believe, anywhere from one to four million people are expected to move into National Mall in Washington D.C. Most of those people will be attempting to do so at the same time. The really exciting part of this, is that about 50,000 of the people here to see the Inauguration are students from all over the country.

Here are just a few of those kids who filled the Newseum today.

Students:

Who did you support in the election and why?

If this was the first time that you really paid attention to politics, what prompted you to do so?

Everyone:

A lot has been said about the contribution and interest of young people in this election. Please share how you became interested in politics or if there was a political moment that was/is important to you.

  1. During the election, I supported Barack Obama. I supported him because he defended issues that were important to me. I think he really connected with young people in this election. Before this election, I didnt really pay attention to politics. The reason that I started to was that for the first time in this country, a man of color was running for president, making this a very important and historic election.

  6. Obama has been doing great with his speeches and I believe he will do a great job as President of the United States. Obama has influenced me at my youth because I am African American and seeing another African American President gives me a chance to be another African American President!

  8. During the election I supported Obama because from what I heard McCain would be just like bush. Also I didn't want another Bush running our country. I know a lot of people that don't want a black president but would rather have Obama than McCain. Either way everyone was kind of screwed and stuff because of our options for the president elect. But I fully suported Obama and everything he did and does.

  11. During this election I decided to support Barack Obama. For the reason that he had good reasons for wanting to help the U.S. and his plans on tax reliefs really will do good to the working class. What prompted me to pay attention to this election was the state of the economy and I wanted to really view who had better plans to help the economy.

  16. I supported Obama during the election. I believe an inexperienced president may help change our country more than an experienced one. I agreed with Obama's decisions about how to change the country

I think it's unbelievable to be apart of U.S.A history. It's something im able to tell my children and grandchildren about when i'm older. I also find it wonderful that Obama was able to follow in Lincoln's train root to Washinton DC. I think he will make a miraculous 44th president.

    Go Obama :)

I believe that this will be a different experience for our country a change for the better. I am proud to be able to take part in this historical day and share my thoughts and feeling on this situation. When I am older I will remember this day and what I was doing at the time it made history. I hope he comes through and transforms our country into something more unified, with less discrimination and problems with our world today.

  23. I supported Obama in this election because I believe in the things Obama stands for and what he wants to do for the country were very similar to my thoughts. I also supported Obama because I wanted him to be the first African American (partly) president. With the first African American president you begin to feel anything is possible, you begin to feel that you have no limit.

  24. Throughout the entire presidential race, I have been supporting Sen. Barack Obama. He handled himself with poise during all of the debates with Sen. John McCain. In the debates he clearly showed that he was the right candidate for this country.

Barack Obama is what this country needs right now.

  28. During the election I supported Barrack Obama because alot of his ideas really made me believe in him and John Mccain is just like George W. Bush and I personally was not a fan of him. I started to follow this years election and Inauguration because there is a new president that has good ideas that caught my attention.

In this election I really was back and fourth between the two canadates, but then sided with Obama who is now our future president. Like some people said in the upper comments, Barack is making history as long as some kids at my school broad casting over the internet.
This was also my first time really paying attention to politics except for the election. What really made me prompt to do so is after listening to the campaigne, I think Barack can actually make our country better (stoping war). But all i country need is hope, and guidence that is what i think our new 44th president can give us.

  30. I started to pay attention to politics this year because everyone made such a big deal about this years election. I do like Obama because he is such a great speaker.

  31. Throughout the election, I supported Barrack Obama because of his strong, positive message. Obama had a clear stance on issues such as global warming, the economy, and the war in Iraq, and had a plan to approach each with. Obama's message is something we all want to see in our world: change. Obama's view is realistic and optimistic at the same time.

  33. This was not only the first inauguration process that I've paid attention to and have been interested in, but the first election overall. Part of that has to do with my age, and the other part is the issues that are currently surrounding me. Having two older brothers deployed in the military, getting ready to go to college and handle costs of that, and caring for the health of those around me and my loved ones are some of the ideas I had going through my head for the past few months.

It's great seeing so many of my peers becoming involved and active in voting and campaigning. I'm at a great age to start caring about what's going on in the world, because the ways of the President are going to start affecting me more and more the next few years. For most of my friends, it was the first election that they could vote in. Unfortunately, I am still 17 so I missed out on a great opportunity. Voting in the next election is an opportunity I will not pass up.

I was really motivated and inspired by Obama's plans for the war and the economy. I was very appreciative of the approach he made to communicate with America's youth. It certainly worked for me. I can't wait to learn more about him and I am looking forward to the great contributions he will make to America on the road back to recovery.
